TX Straw Poll: Interview with Cong. Mike Conaway

Texas Congressman Mike Conaway attended at the Straw Poll today as a delegate and candidate. Conaway took an early stance in the 2008 Republican presidential primary and endorsed Governor Mitt Romney. The Congressman got behind Romney after a meeting in March where he and his wife had the change to talk with the Governor and found him to be, “a real human being.” “He was the exact same person in front of a crowd of thousands as he was in person,” Conaway said.

Congressman Conaway believes that Romney’s experience in an executive branch position as Governor of Massachusetts, and during the Salt Lake Olympics, gives him the needed experience to be an effective President. Conaway said, “I believe he is the guy with the best chance to head this party to the White House in 2008.”

Conaway, who traveled with Romney in Iowa for a weekend, says that people connect with the Governor because “He is so personable, and a genuine human being who does really well in small groups.”

Although turnout at today’s straw poll in Fort Worth is lower than the original estimates, Congressman Conaway said he was impressed with the die hard Republicans who have turned out on Labor Day weekend for this event. “The election in 2006 was a downer. The voters let us know that we didn’t do what we said we would,” Conaway said. But the Congressman believe that today’s straw poll will help get the grassroots in Texas excited again about being Republicans.

Delegates are voting for their candidates now. Results in a little while.
