Get in the Tent

Submitted by Gravatt on June 30, 2007 - 4:58pm.

Big Red Tent is an effort to combine online activism with fund raising.

How can we do this?

First, we'd like to recruit Republicans of all stripes into the tent - especially folks who want to use the Internet to propel candidates and campaigns toward success.

Second, we want people in the tent community to organize. Folks with similar philosophies will have discussions about their candidates and their passions and we envision a community with lots of groups based upon one philosophy and groups based upon many shared philosophies.

Third, we want to mobilize. Using the tools of the Internet, we want to direct volunteers, ideas and donations to the campaigns that the community chooses.

This should be fun - a lot of fun for us and you.

Idea for Enabling Activism

I have an idea that seems like it might fit with the theme of your site. I live in New York's 13th Congressional District. I have a safe Congressman and two safe Senators. I'd like to write letters to the editor to help Republicans/attack Democrats in competitive races, but there aren't any here.

My idea is the creation of a mechanism, perhaps a database searchable by Congressional district, that would enable people who wish to write letters to the editor about competitive races connect with those who want to sign them but do not feel comfortable writing them. For example, if I were interested in the Minnesota Senate race, I could find someone in Minnesota who would sign but not write a letter. We could collaborate on the topic and content of the letter. I could then write it and send it to him. He would sign it and submit it to the newspaper of his choice.

Anyway, I thought I'd throw that out there and see what you guys thought. Is it valuable? Feasible?

RE: Idea for Enabling Activism

Your idea is feasible, valuable and it falls right inline with the type of action we want to facilitate among an active community. Thanks for the input, Sean. Brad and I are putting this on our 'To-Do' list. I'm thinking we'll also want to allow bloggers to advertise on their sites that they want to write letters or sign letters, and Big Red Tent will provide the connection between them.

Like the vote swapping boards from 2002, 2004 and 2006, this is an idea that capitalizes on the best aspects of the Internet as a medium for organizing and communicating.

Thanks, Sean. Keep in touch and we'll collaborate with you on this feature's development.

Glad to Hear It
